Burning

To burn a print is the opposite of dodging, instead of holding back the exposure, burning is increasing it. It is used for darkening areas of the print like skies to produce dramatic moods or the burning in of bright highlights, as for dodging a hand can be used or two pieces of card with a aperture cut through for localised burning. Both dodging and burning are often used together, for example to lift detail in a specific area of the print, that area can be dodged then burned back at a harder grade setting (more contrast).
